Lincoln Cents were minted with the "Wheat" reverse for
the first 50 years, from 1909 to 1958. These cents are
commonly called Wheat Cents. Lincoln Cents began to be
minted with the "Memorial" reverse in 1959, the 150th
anniversary of Lincoln's birth. These cents are commonly
called Memorial Cents.

The most famous Lincoln Wheat Cent is the 1909-S VDB,
which is a wheat cent that was minted in San Francisco in
1909. This variety of the 1909-S Lincoln Cent has the
designer's initials (VDB) on the bottom of the reverse of
the coin.

A well known variety of the Lincoln Wheat Cent is the 1922
"no D". All Lincoln Cents were minted at the Denver mint
in 1922 and all of these should have had the D mint mark
under the date. Some of these coins are missing the D
mint mark and can be quite valuable depending on the
condition of the coin. These coins should be examined by
an expert as there are varieties of "no D" coin. The ones
struck with a particular die pair are considerably more
valuable than the others.

Another fairly well known variety of the Lincoln Wheat
Cent is the one minted in 1943, during World War II. The
1943 Lincoln Cents have a Steel core and are coated with
Zinc. This was done due to a shortage of Copper during
the war. These cents are silver/gray in color rather than
red/orange/brown copper colors.

The 1955 Doubled Die error coin was minted in
Philadelphia and has a doubling of the lettering on the
obverse (front) of the coin, including a doubled date. This
is a valuable coin, depending on its condition.

There are two different kinds of Lincoln Cents minted by
the US Mint; Business Strike Lincoln Cents and Proof
Lincoln Cents.

Business Strike Lincoln Cents are manufactured by the
US Mint for the purpose of enabling commerce. Modern
Business Strike Lincoln Cents are minted in Philadelphia
and Denver. They are distributed to banks and credit
unions nationwide and are used for spending.

Proof Lincoln Cents are minted on high quality planchets
and are struck at least twice. These coins typically have a
mirrored background and cameo foreground objects
(devices), for example the bust of Lincoln. Modern Proof
Lincoln Cents are manufactured in San Francisco and
bear the 's' mint mark. Proof Lincoln Cents are minted
primarily for collectors.
