The Lincoln Memorial Cent, also called the Lincoln Penny
was first minted in 1959, following the Lincoln Wheat Cent
which had been minted for the first 50 years of the Lincoln
Cent series.

The Lincoln Memorial Cent was mostly Copper from 1959
to 1982 and was changed to mostly Zinc (with a Copper
coating) in 1982. 1982 was the transition year from Copper
to Zinc and there were 7 varieties of Lincoln Cents minted
in 1982.

There are two different kinds of Lincoln Cents minted by
the US Mint; Business Strike Lincoln Cents and Proof
Lincoln Cents.

Business Strike Lincoln Cents are manufactured by the
US Mint for the purpose of enabling commerce. They are
distributed to banks and credit unions nationwide and are
used for spending.

Proof Lincoln Cents are minted on high quality planchets
and are struck at least twice. These coins typically have a
mirrored background and cameo foreground objects
(devices), for example the bust of Lincoln. Proof Lincoln
Cents are minted primarily for collectors.
