Proof Jefferson Nickels
No Proof Nickels were minted from
1965 to 1967. Special Mint Set Nickels
were minted instead.

The Jefferson Nickel was first minted in 1938, and
continues to be minted today.
In 2004 the Westward Journey Series of Jefferson Nickels
was introduced by the US Mint with a new bust of
Jefferson on the obverse (front) of the coins. The first two
Jefferson Nickels in this series were the Keelboat and the
Peace Medal Nickels. The third and fourth in the series,
American Bison and Ocean View were minted in 2005. The
final Westward Journey Series Jefferson Nickel was
minted in 2006 and is the Return to Monticello, thus named
because the original bust of Jefferson's Monticello
mansion was restored to the reverse of the coin. The new
bust of Jefferson remains on the obverse of the nickels
today. The Westward Journey Nickels were manufactured
both in Proof and in Business Strike.
This page of Jefferson Nickels offers Proof Strike coins.
These coins are manufactured by the US Mint mainly for
collectors.
Proof Jefferson Nickels are minted on high quality
planchets and are struck at least twice. These coins
typically have a mirrored background and cameo
foreground objects (devices), for example the bust of
Jefferson.
